25/5/09

We went out to walk to the changing of the guards but it was cold and rainy so we went back and got an umbrella, stopped in a cafe next to the Baker Street stop for pastries and took the train down to Green Park.

It was packed with 10,000 runners doing the 10k, which we figured out was because it was Memorial Day here too. We waited around for a little but they didn't end up doing the changing of the guards.

We walked up to the National Gallery and did a quick tour of Monets, Van Goghs, and then over to the Da Vinci. From there we walked to New Oxford Street to try to get Mary a fancy umbrella at this old umbrella place, but it was closed.

We went across the street for crepes because Mary never had one before and wanted to. I had apple cinnamon and whipped cream while Mary had the Nutella and banana. Her's was better.

We went into the British Museum, looking at the Rosetta Stone, Egyptian stuff and then spent a while in the Assyrian part because of Mary's ancestry. She even sort of looked like the people in the carvings, it was cool. We peaked into the Elgin Marbles and then left.

Mary wanted to study, but we stopped for some groceries (I got Planets, which are chocolate with crunchy, chewy, and soft insides, really good) and Mary took a little nap. And then we went to the Sherlock Holmes gift store to get Sam a pipe. From there we went and bought a jar of Nutella and went to Regent's Park and she studied while I read Sherlock and we downed the jar in about 15 minutes.

It started to rain so we went to look for somewhere to eat along Marylebone High Street, ending up at Pontefract Castle, a pub from the early 1700s. This was my favorite meal in Europe probably, for sure in the UK. We ordered cheese and mushroom wedges, which was potatos covered in cheese with mushroom (awesome) and I had the vegetarian sausage and mash, which was really really good. For dessert we had a brownie with ice cream, just a really great time (and really cheap).

We came back and packed up and I finished up Sherklock. I loved reading it. I got a ton in Mary's bag, which should be a help, especially if I buy up Primark before I go.
